Ethan here, I want to write to you about the next step in your career and life. It's a bigger topic and I go pretty deep here so please read with an open mind. Let's first begin with -
The misconception of how people think of the "personal brand"
I'm guilty of this too... People talk about "building your personal brand" as if you don't have one already, but that is incorrect.
Everyone already has a personal brand.
Substitute the word "personal brand" for "reputation".
They are both essentially the same thing. Your personal brand is your reputation and how you present yourself to the world.
When people talk about your "personal brand" they're referring to -
How people view and value you as a person
How people view and value your ideas
How people view and value your experience and knowledge.
You already have a personal brand and "building" one does not make it any better than the next person's.
I personally have a personal brand that a lot of people are aware of because I post content.
This gives me a voice to share my ideas and interests to an audience.
That's it, that's the only difference.
Branding will package your personal values into a memorable identity for your network.
Content will determine how big your network is.
Your personal brand is shaped from how you talk in a group, how you carry yourself, how you present your self in the market, and of course your online public resume.
Also known as your social media account.
Your social media account, is your public resume.
Yes. Your social media account is your public resume. Create opportunities for yourself by creating content.
People are fairly aware that your future employer, clients, or business partners will check your social media to learn more about you.
Most of us make sure we don't post anything too provocative or conversational for this reason...
So then why would you not be posting content about your interests, passions, and industry?
You should be showing people what you're intersted about, which should also aline with what you do for a living.
If your interests and passions are not aligned with your career then you have some more work and learning to do, but that'll be for another letter.
The Digital Renaissance...
Sharing your ideas, stories, and expertise to what could be millions of people (if you learn how to actually create good content).
Is one of the most impactful, and high leverage skills you could learn.
This is the biggest opportunity that almost everyone in the world has access to.
Yet nobody seems to take action. There is such little competition, that if you committed to creating content, you would become an industry leader in just a few months.
Trust me.
There's no competition if you take the action and learn the skills.
It's a shame to think that some of the most innovative thought leaders didn’t have a chance at digital communication.
You could only imagine the impact they would have with the modern digital tools we all have today at our finger tips.
I hope there is more people in the world creating entertaining and valuable content to educate people on their ideas, interests, and expertise.
Most content is still brain numbing, harmful, and soulless.
If you want to help change this and raise the vibration and consciousness of the world, start creating entertaining meaningful content.
You will be generously rewarded for your efforts, as that is just one of the many bi products that sharing your ideas with the world brings.
What will I gain from "posting content" ?
I'm telling you that posting content and sharing your message to millions of people is a great opportunity, but will that actually result from that?
I always appreciate when people break down their ideas in simple terms with tangible examples and stories. So here it is:
Please read all of the scenarios.
Someone who has a job and wants new opportunities for themselves.
You will become a thought leader in your space, demand higher authority, and have other industry professionals reaching out to you, poaching you, or giving you more opportunities to have an impact in your field.
Think promotions, new job offers, public speaking events, and more acknowledgement of your work.
Someone who has a job and wants to create their own income:
You will allow yourself the freedom to create a new income for yourself. Wether that be in tangent with your current job, or to completely replace your current job through your new business. Enjoy location, time, and money freedom through providing more value to more people then at your previous job. You will then be able to monetize your audience through people that want work and learn closer to you.
Inspire and education thousands of people through completely for free content, and monetize from the people who want to learn directly from you.
Someone who is freelancing and looking to expand their income:
You will create new services for your clients and expand the total addressable market you'll actually be able to service. You will do this through your free content and paid digital products or services. If you're passionate about your work and who you help, then this should be very exciting. You are coming closer fulfilling your life's purpose in helping as many people as possible.
Increase your clientele in real life and give yourself the opportunity to chose who you work with and accept. Increase the total addressable market by making a living through digital products.
Someone who is trying to build a business and create something bigger than themselves:
You will be creating a strong personal brand to inspire your future team, attract industry leading talent, attract future clients, and be able to monetize your personal brand to fund your new business. Earning 10K - 30K / month through an audience and digital product, completely organically, will be fairly easy for you after you learn how to create effective content. Especially if you're already business savy. The extra money will help fund resources to your content creation (like hiring editors) and ultimately will help you not live as a broke entrepreneur. All while having the freedom to not dilute your business to investors just in hopes of getting it off the ground.
If you cannot master the 1 person business and become a leader in your space. Then it will be unlikely for you to succeed when you have to lead a team people with millions of dollars on the line.
Continuous learning and the ego.
To some of you that may have been overwhelming to read.
Potentially might have even offended you or felt like a personal attack.
Rest assured, that is just your ego simply trying protect it's own identity.
Our ego does not like change, new ideas, or thoughts that question what we consider to be our own existing reality.
However the only way to grow and learn is to consume and internalize new ideas that are being presented to us.
